Thought for the morning of Sun February 13, 2011
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us.” Consider who we were, and what we feel ourselves to be even now when corruption is powerful in us, and you will wonder at our adoption. Yet we are called “the sons of God.” What a high relationship is that of a son, and what privileges it brings! What care and tenderness the son expects from his father, and what love the father feels towards the son! But all that, and more than that, we now have through Christ. As for the temporary drawback of suffering with the elder More >
Humble Yourself: James 4: 6b
Romans 4: 6b – 10
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
James is quoting … and commentators are not sure what he is quoting. Barclay says, “We may assume either that James is quoting from some book now lost which he regarded as Scripture, or More >
Foundational Faith
In Matthew 21:21, Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.”
Faith! What an interesting thing. It has been altered so much that it loses its true meaning. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. We hear so many times to “just have faith.” However, faith in what? More >
Temptation At Work
Matthew 27:40, those who were passing by hurling abuse as Jesus were saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
In our darkest nights, temptation is working at it’s best. In Luke 4:13, after the devil tried to tempt Jesus, it says the devil left Jesus until an opportune time. This seems to be the opportune time that Luke was referring to. After healing all their people, raising them from the dead, teaching them the ways of God, and even leaving His place in heaven to More >
Thought for the morning of Mon May 14, 2012
The boundless realms of his Father’s universe are Christ’s by prescriptive right. As “heir of all things,” he is the sole proprietor of the vast creation of God, and he has admitted us to claim the whole as ours, by virtue of that deed of joint-heir-ship which the Lord hath ratified with his chosen people. The golden streets of paradise, the pearly gates, the river of life, the transcendent bliss, and the unutterable glory, are, by our blessed Lord, made over to us for our everlasting possession. All that he has he shares with his people. The crown royal he More >
