What are we? Where are we from? Who do we belong to? With whom do we identify ourselves with? Many people identify themselves with the place they were born or where they currently reside. They may either identify themselves as being American, European, Australian, Asian, Haitian, Jamaican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Bahamian, and the list can go on and on as we have many different countries in the world. Then, the religious folks separate themselves with another classification system. Some are Baptist, Pentecostal, Catholic and many other denominations with Christianity and then outside of Christianity, there are Hindu, Muslim, Agonistic, Atheist, and other types of religious beliefs people also associate themselves with. At this point, people also try to mix their religious beliefs with their nationality to make their country a Christian nation or a Muslim nation or a Hindu nation or even an atheistic nation. While they do so, they continue to proclaim the separation between Church and State.

America (or rather Christians and make-believe Christians in America) have declared the United States as a Christian nation. It is said its forefathers built this nation on Christian principles, upon the Word of God. While this may be true, building a nation upon certain principles does not make the nation Christian anymore than a car being Christian because it has a fish logo. Praise the Lord that the United States as well as many other nations were built on Christian principles. As the residents of those countries move away from the Word of God, we see these nations slowly crumbling. If we look at the United States, who can claim one aspect of this nation that isn’t fading away and being turned over into the hands of the devil. The same can be said for any nation that has turned its back on God. In 2 Chronicles 15:2, after King Asa has a great victory, the prophet Azariah says to the King, “The LORD is with you while you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.” This truth should ring through every nation. If we read through the Word of God, what nation that has forsaken God has ever been able to recover from God’s judgment. It is depressing that everyone has the opportunity to experience God’s grace, but that many would rather choose to have God’s judgment fall upon them.

We all come from somewhere, but it is definitely more important to know where we are going. The trials and tribulations it takes to arrive at our final destination displays God’s faithfulness to us to deliver us, even when we thought we were not going to make it. Jesus tells us in John 10:14, “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own,” and then tells us in John 10:27-28, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” Have you ever seen those “Not of this World” apparel, bumper stickers, backpacks, coffee mugs and whatever else they can slap that logo on? Those are great reminders of the truth but how often (along with many other things) does it just become another piece of Christian apparel?
